By resolution adopted on September 10, 2020, the Administrative Council of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) re-elected Meg Kinnear to a third term as Secretary-General of ICSID.

Ms. Kinnear first joined ICSID as Secretary-General in 2009. Previously, she served as Director General of the Trade Law Bureau of Canada, where she was responsible for the conduct of all international investment and trade litigation involving Canada.

ICSID’s Secretary General is nominated by the Chair of the ICSID Administrative Council in consultation with Member States, and requires the vote of two-thirds majority of the members of the Administrative Council.

“I wish to thank ICSID Member States for their continued confidence in my leadership. It has been an immense privilege to serve at ICSID and I look forward to continuing to make progress on the important business of the Centre that lies ahead” said Ms. Kinnear.

During Ms. Kinnear’s tenure, ICSID has experienced significant growth in membership and caseload. Priority has been given to streamlining internal processes of the Secretariat and strengthening ICSID’s technical assistance program.

Since 2018, Ms. Kinnear has also led a project to comprehensively modernize ICSID’s procedural rules for arbitration, conciliation, mediation and fact-finding. Earlier this year, ICSID also launched a process to develop a Code of Conduct for Adjudicators in Investor-State Dispute Settlement, together with the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).
