38th AAA-ICDR – ICC – ICSID Joint Colloquium on International Arbitration

For over forty years, the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, the International Chamber of Commerce International Court of Arbitration, and the International Centre for Dispute Resolution of the American Arbitration Association have co-sponsored the Joint Colloquium on International Arbitration. The 38th edition of the Colloquium will be hosted at World Bank headquarters in Washington, D.C., on May 21, 2024.

The Colloquium will feature updates on trends and initiatives from the three institutions, interactive sessions on issues at the forefront of commercial and investment arbitration, and an opportunity to network with practitioners and arbitrators from around the world.

Global Economic Prospects

The global economy is forecast to experience the slowest half-decade of GDP growth in 30 years. In this session, Indermit Gill, the World Bank Group’s Chief Economist, explains the challenges that countries face in growing their economies and reducing poverty. He will also set out the policy solutions to counter economic headwinds, including expanding trade flows, strengthening fiscal and financial institutions, and establishing better investment climates.

Drawing from the fields of psychology, sociology, and communication science, this session will explore the art of persuasion and how to leverage science-based techniques for effective opening presentations, witness preparation, and cross-examination.

Corruption has long been an issue that tribunals face in resolving international disputes but has come under renewed scrutiny in the wake of the set-aside of an award in favor of Irish-owned BVI company Process & Industrial Development against Nigeria. This discussion asks whether the expectations for how tribunals deal with corruption have shifted in light of such high-profile cases.
