Reed Smith and AfricArb are co-hosting an event on September 20, 2021 on “New trends and future directions of mining arbitration in Africa” as part of Paris Arbitration Week 2021.

For years, the mining sector in Africa has been one of the most important drivers of the continent’s growth, as well as a recurrent arena for international arbitration disputes. This is still the case.

In part one, a panel of distinguished speakers from Africa and beyond will discuss the post-pandemic outlook for dispute resolution in Africa’s mining sector – including best practices to prevent mining disputes, governance issues from the perspective of the State and the investor, climate change and environmental protection, human rights, and the role of local communities.

In part two, an Oxford Union-style debate will address:

1.    Whether there should be no limit to a State’s right to enact tax and customs regulations in the mining sector

2.    Whether an arbitral tribunal should be able to prevent parallel proceedings before national courts involving the investor
