ICSID's Investment Mediation Insights webinar, which debuted in 2021, returns in 2025 with a new installment of practical insights into the growing field of mediation between States and investors.
This episode of ICSID’s Investment Mediation Insights webinar series convened a panel of seasoned mediators with experience mediating investor-State disputes. Our panelists shared insights into investment mediation practice and shared practical notes for counsel and parties, including advocacy.
Speakers:
Birgit Sambeth: Birgit is Partner at Altenburger Ltd in Geneva. As a former substitute Judge and judicial Conciliator, acting as Mediator, Arbitrator and President of Dispute Boards, she is a dispute resolution specialist and is regularly appointed as Neutral to prevent and resolve complex, international and domestic disputes in commercial and international contracts, transactions, and projects. She is a Distinguished Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators (IAM) and is accredited by numerous institutions including ICC, CEDR, CPR, ASA IMI, and WIPO, where she is listed as an Expert Panelist for IP disputes. She is also a recognized mediator at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and served as the external Mediator for the WTO from 2016 to 2022. Birgit has been elected on ICSID Chair’s Panel of Conciliators at the International Centre for Settlement of Investor State Disputes. Birgit teaches commercial mediation and mediation advocacy at the MIDS-Graduate Institute in Geneva, as well as at various universities worldwide. She was the President of the Swiss Bar Association (2021–2023), is a founding member of the ADR Commission of the Geneva Bar and is a former Vice-President of the Swiss Chamber of Commercial Mediation.
George Lim: George is Chairman of the Singapore International Mediation Centre. He was President of the Law Society of Singapore between 1998-99, and was appointed Senior Counsel in 2010. George has mediated more than 900 disputes, and has extensive experience in mediating cross-cultural, cross-border disputes in Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Maldives, South Korea, Australia, Fiji and Dubai. In particular, he has successfully mediated investor state disputes and claims against governments. George was Singapore’s mediation consultant to UNCITRAL Working Group II, which led to the adoption of the Singapore Convention on Mediation in 2019. In October 2019, he was appointed to the Roster of Panel Chairs of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) on Dispute Settlement. George is on ICSID’s Panel of Conciliators.

Frauke Nitschke: Frauke is a Senior Legal Counsel at ICSID and serves as the team lead for one of the Centre’s case management teams. Frauke further leads ICSID’s investor-State mediation activities, including the development of the ICSID Mediation Rules, amendments to ICSID’s conciliation frameworks, and ICSID’s Background Paper on Investment Mediation. Frauke has developed and conducted investor-State capacity-building workshops and trainings for mediators and government officials, and led the Centre’s contributions on mediation to the United Nations Commission on Trade and Law (UNCITRAL) Working Group III on investor-State dispute settlement reform. She is an accredited mediator and admitted to practice law in New York and Washington, D.C., and holds law degrees from the Freie Universität Berlin and Georgetown University Law Center (LL.M.), and a Master’s degree in Organizational Psychology from the FernUniversität Hagen.
