The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID)Georgetown University Law Center (Georgetown Law) and the International Law Institute – African Centre for Legal Excellence (ILI-ACLE) are delighted to once again offer the high-level intensive, practical and engaging training program in investment arbitration. This year’s Masterclass will run online and feature ICSID counsel and a selection of seasoned arbitration practitioners from different parts of the globe.

Investment arbitration continues to be an increasingly important area of knowledge and specialization that calls for more participation from African counsel and arbitrators. Due to its international nature, the program also welcomes -and has previously hosted – participants from other parts of the world. The program’s international and practical approach with additional insight into experiences and developments related to the African continent results in a unique and rich program.

Engage with and learn firsthand from an experienced group of high-level experts, and earn certification jointly awarded by the three institutions. The program also presents a useful and rewarding networking and interactive platform that hosts diverse, well positioned and experienced participants facilitated by leading experts in the field.

The program will run in two parts:

September 21 – October 2, 2020: 10-day introductory program        FEE*: US$625 per participant

November 16 -20, 2020: 5-day advanced program                               FEE*: US$425 per participant

*Make one lump payment before August 21, 2020 to attend both programs for a discounted total fee of $950. Any payments made after August 30, 2020 (or October 25, 2020 for the advanced program) will attract a surcharge of $50.

Participants with good knowledge or experience in investment arbitration who find value in reflecting further and engaging on developments in investment arbitration may straight to the advanced program which will be developed around a mock hearing, and assume previous knowledge of key principles and issues. The program tends to be oversubscribed so apply today to reserve your space using this application form.

The 2019 program, held in Lagos, was fully subscribed, attracting legal and other professionals from various African countries and other parts of the globe, including India.

Impressions of the Program – Alumni

“India is not a signatory to the ICSID convention but, thinking laterally, I saw potential common issues that would add value to my knowledge. What was unique about the program was being exposed to the inter-cultural experiences of international arbitration through the diversity of expertise provided.”

– Shiv Ram Pandey, Advocate Supreme Court of India

“The quality and calibre of presenters and participants provided a unique networking opportunity. They are top players in their respective fields.”

– Alewo Folashade Etuk, Managing Partner, Sceptre Law, Nigeria

Impressions of the Program – Faculty

“Despite the global backlash against investment treaty arbitration or ISDS, countries around the world continue to enter into bilateral investment treaties and mega regional investment agreements. There is no sign that the number of investment disputes will decline. It is therefore important for lawyers in various parts of the world to be aware of these treaties and their arbitration mechanism.”

– Dr. Borzu Sabahi, Partner, Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt and Mosle LLP and Adjunct Professor Georgetown University Law Center
